Hispanic/Latino Dolls and Action Figures

This is in response to D7ana's recent blog post featuring a list of Hispanic and Latino dolls and action figures. I have several dolls from her list.

Hispanic everGirl

High School Musical Gabriella

Shindana Disco Juanita

Mattel Kayla

Jakks Pacific Lola

BBi Perfect Body Hispanic

Triad Alpha Hispanic

Hot Toys TrueType
Cuban American

Jakks Pacific Josie and the Pussycats Valerie

The dolls below did not make the list, but could they be?

Unknown Action Figure Guy

Mattel Prince Aidan

Dollar Store Guy

Mattel Mermaid
(with Juku Couture Body)

Flavas Tika

GI Joe Helicopter Pilot

I'm pretty sure that this GI Joe Helicopter Pilot is.

In my doll world, Kayla is Jenna's mother, so if Kayla is Hispanic, then so is Jenna.

One final group shot.

  1. Great collection of dolls you have there and this will be a bit nerdy, but I like how you formatted your identification photos!

    1. Thanks Muff! Your nerdy comment is appreciated, as I was being super nerdy in determining how I wanted to present this information and trying to make sure everything was consistent. I stopped short of alphabetizing the dolls within the tables. LOL...

  2. Very nice group of dolls. I did not know Aiden was Hispanic! I learn something new every day! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you Phyllis! I don't think that Aidan was marketed as being Hispanic, but he is in my doll world. :) The dolls in that second table are just my speculation or reflective of what's in my doll world. Bascially, unless the manufacture has specifically stated that the doll is Hispanic, do not take my word on it. :)

    1. Thank you, Debbie! I checked for markings on Juanita's body to see if I could definitively determine that she is indeed Juanita, and not a lighter Wanda. She has no such markings that I was able to identify. On your blog in one of the posts were you were featuring Linda's dolls for sale, there was one of these lighter dolls that Linda had identified as "Wanda". You might check with her to see if she still has it for sale.

    1. Thank you MajorMistakes! I bought Kayla so many years ago, and her hair still smells like strawberries! I sniff her hair every time I pick her up.

  6. Nioce collection of dolls. I would have included Tika from Flavas as being Hispanic.

    1. Thank you Male Doll World! In my doll world, Tika is Hispanic. I don't know if that was Mattel's intent.

  8. Hi Roxanne, you have a great selection of Hispanic Dolls, as far as Mattel goes I believe also Pretty Sweet Thing Marisa is Hispanic, she's my favourite Mattel sculpt along with Glitter.

    1. Thanks Billa! I don't have Marisa in my collection, but she does have a beautiful sculpt. My favorite Mattel sculpt is Mbili.

    2. Mbili is gorgeous, I love the Byron Lars Charmaine King: is an awesome doll...... but unfortunately I'm not able to rebody dolls, so I stopped collecting Model Muse some time ago....

  9. That's a great selection (I've never seen that Joe helicopter pilot before, but he looks like a solid figure!). Love the labelling too.

    1. Thanks jSarie! That "he" is a "she". :) I don't know why the female helicopter pilots are labeled GI "Joe", but they are "Janes" believe it or not. Her hair is pulled back into a bun. Under the uniform, she has breasts and a waist. Is she convincing as a female? Well, you be the judge. :)

  10. Nice cataloging! I wonder how one knows the dollar store and GI Joe dolls are Hispanic. Is there Spanish writing on the box or something?

    1. Thank you The grandmommy! For dolls in the second table, there is nothing about the manufacturing (that I'm aware of) that indicates that they are Hispanic. For the GI Joe helicopter pilot, I've always thought that she's Hispanic. For Prince Aidan, I didn't know if Mattel intended for him to be Hispanic, but he has always been so in my doll world. For the dollar store guy and the unknown action figure guy, I was looking around my doll room for Hispanic dolls for this post, and I saw those 2 and thought "could be."

  11. Lovely! I'm especially taken with Lola.

Flavas Tika might be canonically Hispanic, since Flavas were supposed to be multi-ethnic.

My theory on dollar-store dolls and action figures is that, in the absence of other markings (which is most of the time), they are whatever ethnicity seems plausible from their look.

    1. Thank you Smaller Places! When I was preparing the dolls for this photo shoot, I held up Lola for my husband and asked him if she was Hispanic and he said yes. I said "But she has red hair and green eyes." He told me that I've been in Tulsa too long. Maybe so.

I think you're right about Tika. I did a brief search, and the information that I read about the Flavas line is that they represent Black, White, and Hispanic people. So I wonder if I should have included Liam in this post? My Liam looks White, but I've seen other Liams that do look like they could be Hispanic.

  12. Applause! Thanks for sharing your Latino collection, Roxanne!

I love the table formatting, too.

I haven't found the source describing P Bo as Hispanic - and I know it seems odd that she would be singled out like that ...

I think the Sporty Liam looks Hispanic.

Thanks again for this fun post!
