What Has Happened to Janay?

Can someone please explain to me how my Integrity Toys Studio It Janay went from this

to this???

I remember when I first got her years ago. She looked so cute in the box, but I just had to release her.

She fit right in with the other dolls in my collection.

She recently had a good time making music with other Integrity Toys dolls.

Who knew that this would soon be her fate. :(

Whenever I decide that I want to try a reroot, she is first on my list! In the meantime, I have a few wigs that she can sport.

I just need answers. Why why why did this happen?

Check out my YouTube video to see all of the horror as it unfolded.

  1. Oh no, poor Janay! The only doll I have had that happen with in my Dena Doll. I was going to reroot her, but I got her a couple of nice wigs instead and I really like her in her wigs, so she is staying that way. There are a ton of instructional videos out there on how to reroot a doll and I have actually done one reroot that I think turned out pretty good. If I can do it, I am sure you can! Good luck and keep us posted with what you do.

    1. Thank you Phyllis! Janay has a couple of wig options right now, so her head is not getting cold waiting for me to reroot her. I don't think I'm quite ready to tackle the reroot just yet. I'm still stunned by Janay's sudden hair loss.

  2. Wow!! 😯 I have never seen that happen. I have her and I am afraid to touch her hair now. I am thinking that the stitched hair in the few holes that they have and glued in the rest. That is horrible! I bought her for her big hair/curls. I am sorry this happened to your dolly.😔

Rerooting is not too bad. You could work on her a little at a time. I am wondering if you will have to add holes to her head since they only have them in the center and around the edge.

    1. Thanks for you comments Georgia Girl! I didn't even have to touch Janay to see that something was horribly wrong. Her hair changed color, and I could see little bits of hair all around her, and a couple of empty hair plugs were visible. But when I did touch the hair, it was so brittle and broke at the slightest touch. It's so very strange.

  3. Oh no! That is horrible! I had an 18 inch doll do that. Her hair just started falling out one day. I was devastated! I, too, did not keep her in any extreme conditions. It looks like the hair itself reacted to something, probably had something to do with how it was made to begin with.

As for rerooting, I have two places bookmarked for buying doll hair from. Dollyhair.com and restoredoll.com and restoredoll has a rerooting guide that may be helpful? (http://www.restoredoll.com/easy-rerooting-guide/). I haven't seen a good place to find cute curly (and good quality) rerooting hair, but I am still looking!

    1. Thank you Erin O! I'm going to check out those resources as soon as I'm ready to tackle the project of rerooting Janay. I guess I'll have to root her with straight hair, and then give her a boil perm to give her curls again. I'd love to be able to give her the tiny curls that she once had.

  4. This is so weird! It reminds me of old makeup sponges, where you open an old compact or something and try to pick it up but it simply disintegrates. I was going to suggest dollyhair, but I'll be original and give you two more options:
    - if you want to keep an ethnic hairstyle, a easy shortcut is yarn dreadlocks. Simply get some yarn that looks like dreadlocks and root the head with that. Depending on the yarn, you can skip a lot of plugs. I rooted a head like that and filled every third plug or so. You can apply any of the common rooting methods but I used a small crochet hook to grab the end of the yarn and pull it inside. No knots or glued was necessary, the yarn passed through the hole with difficulty and it would not come off with normal handling.
= Janay's head looked familiar, and I recalled seeing several IT heads on aliexpress. Is this her? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/NK-One-Pcs-Original-FR-Doll-Head-For-FR-Dolls-2002-Limited-Edition-Collection-Brown-Curly/32594023938.html According to buyer feeback, the hair seems ok, maybe not very densely rooted but the hair itself doesn't look suspicious. You could get a second head to enjoy the original hair while you work with this one. I wanted to buy a head from this series myself but I have no spare matching bodies.

    1. Thank you for your input, BlackKitty! Yes, the doll head in the link that you posted is the same as my doll. That's a great idea regarding rooting the head with yarn dreadlocks. I don't have any dolls with that modification yet, and it sounds easy enough. I'll have to keep my eye out for yarn that looks like dreadlocks.

  5. I have had that happen to an old AA Candi doll and some of my off brand doll after about 10 or more years. I have a Manager I have out on display. I just checked here hair and thus far it is OK!

I had always wondered if it is caused by a reaction between the hair and the plastic head because it seems to happen at the hairline. Well on my dolls it did.

I haven't tried rerooting either but we all evolve in our doll collecting.

    1. Thanks Ms. Leo! I wish I knew definitively what caused the issue. Oh well, I'll try to make her next head of hair fabulous!

  6. I am glad that I am not alone. I had that happen to some non brand dolls, my TLC dolls, my scary spice dolls and my Consuelo Olmec doll. So far my integrity toy dolls did not lose any hair. I think the hair is bad and it wears out over time.

    1. Thanks MDW! Sorry that this has happened to several of your dolls. I really hope that this doesn't happen to some of my more expensive Integrity dolls.

  7. Wow, that's awful. Sorry to see that hair loss. I had that doll - reddish hair, green eyes, medium-dark brown complexion - but I don't know if I have her still or if I sold her. I don't recall her hair falling out, but it's been some time since I have seen many of my dolls.

The Janay dolls were not always as well made as I would have liked. Gorgeous faces and clever fashions, but sometimes the quality control was hit or miss.

The blond bob looks good on her. Good luck if you decide to re-root her.

  8. I not sure which she was but I all of the hair of a Clone was in the comb. It was a little creepy. Not sure which she was. I was going to give her a natural do now she is bald.

    1. Thanks The grandmommy! It was very weird to see this happen to Janay. One of my other dolls is bald now, too (a cheap plastic one).

  9. Oh, I'm so glad - but also sad - that I saw this! I saw this head on eBay and she is so pretty, I wanted to add her to my collection, especially as I really love her pretty hair! But I am not going to risk it now and I think I may have to opt for a new release Janay after all. I thought I was being clever by going for a vintage one but if this happens... no way! I hope you eventually sorted your cute Janay's hair problem. I have a bald doll too whose original hair bugged me so much, I had to remove it. But she looks so great bald and can wear so many cute hats that I haven't done anything about it yet! I did just buy her an awesome wig from Culte De Paris on Etsy though...

  10. Thank you for your comments Jocelyn Earle! I still haven't done anything with this head as of yet. She's still wearing a Barbie wig for now. If I do re-root her, it will be at some point far into the future. She's still cute, and can pull off a cute wig or nice hat.
