Small Girl Dolls Comparisons

I have a request on my Comparisons page to do an articulation comparison with some of my younger dolls.  The girls below will get us started.  They all have the ability to bend at the knees and elbows at the least, and they are the shortest girls that I have that have this ability.  They are from left to right:  Mattel Janet, Juku Couture Kana, Only Hearts Club Briana Joy, Kenya Fashion Madness Keyshia, Bratz doll with Hottiez Kiara head, and Winx Club Layla.

I am posing them similarly to my previous figure comparisons.  Some of these young ladies have appeared in other comparisons, but they wanted to come back for comparisons with dolls their own size.  Janet, Kana, Keyshia, and Kiara can all stand on their own without assistance from a doll stand.  Briana Joy can stand with shoes and her feet can adjust to heel height, so she can stand in both flat and heeled shoes.

Here they are showing their flexed arms.  Janet, Kana, Keyshia, and Kiara have jointed elbows.  Briana Joy has a cloth body over a wire armature.  Layla has vinyl over wire for her limbs.  Janet is able to flex her arm further and hold it in position better than the others

None of them are able to cross their arms completely, but Janet comes the closest.  Janet, Kana, Briana Joy, and Keyshia can share shoes.  Kiara's Bratz body has large feet (shoes) that can be removed.  Layla has heeled feet and can wear some of the larger Barbie shoes.  Janet and Kana have articulation at the ankle.

Here they are doing a side stretch.  Janet and Kana have lower torso articulation, while Kiara is articulated at the chest.  I think that Janet has the best range of motion here.

Here they are in the "walk like an Egyptian" pose.  Kana and Kiara have articulation at the wrist.  Briana Joy's feet can be flexed.  Kiara's removable feet can swivel.  I think that Kana does this move the best.  What do you think?

Here they are doing kneeling back bends.  Janet does this the best.

Here they are showing off their hands.  None of these dolls can grip objects (no big surprise there).  Janet's hands are my favorites from this group.

Here they are attempting to sit cross-legged on the floor.  Briana Joy does this the best.

Here they are attempting to do middle splits.  Kiara does this the best.

Here they are attempting to do front splits.  Keyshia does this the best.

Here they are doing a leg lift.  Kana and Briana Joy do this the best.

Here they are sitting down.  Kana's legs will not close while seated.  Layla has issues when it comes to siting down (she might do better on a higher surface.  Keyshia looks the most natural to me in her seated position.

Do you have a favorite among these dolls?  What makes that particular doll stand out for you?  Which ones pose the best?  Which ones look the best?  Which dolls are the most realistic?

  1. I like Janet, Kana, and Keyshia best. Janet and Keyshia have bright smiles. They look friendly. Kana looks a little shy ;-)

When I saw Kiara's front split, I winced. I cannot imagine doing that, lol. Looks too painful. But go head Keyshia doing that side split. Mind I cannot do that either, lol.

It's fun how you have posed them ... Keyshia and Briana Joy seem to be checking how the others are doing as if to do their best. The Egyptian walk photo, though, is my favorite. Too cute.

Thanks for sharing these photos showing the articulation of these younger dolls. It's so fun to see them - almost like they are in a gym class.

    1. Thanks for your comments, D7ana! I think that Janet and Keyshia look like friendly, well-adjusted young ladies with their bright smiles. I have to say that my favorite among these is Kana because of her articulation. I'm not thrilled about her startled expression, though. Janet and Keyshia are probably tied for second place.

    1. Thank you The grandmommy! I was worried about Briana Joy, but she can really hold her own when posing. I had been timid when posing her in the past because of her wire armature, but today I went for it and she really showed what she can do.

  3. In that last photo, they all do look like they are relaxing after a gym class. Great comparison photos. I agree with you about Kana in the 'walk like an Egyptian' pose but Layla's legs give that pose an interesting twist. I thought I would be able to pick a favourite but as I go back and look at the pictures again, I think they are all good.

    1. Thank you for your comments, Carrickters! In the last photo, I really wanted them all to sit up straight, but some of them just weren't having it. I guess they really just needed to relax. :)

  4. I always enjoy your comparisons.

All the girls are really cute. Their attempts, whether successful or not, to pose in the various ways was interesting and funny. Some were able to do what you set out for them to do while others could not. I admire their attempts.

I don't really have a favorite, but in each picture, I looked to see how well Keyshia performed. I guess I rooted for her along the way. I was happy to see that her front-end split was the best. Her smile always made me smile.

The final image was too funny. The girls look pooped after so many body contortions, especially Layla!

    Great post!

    1. Thank you, Debbie! I was rooting for Keyshia, too. She would easily be my favorite in this group if she had articulation at the wrists and ankles.

I looked at the photos again and noticed that I didn't pose Layla for the front splits photo. If anyone wants to see her do it, click here. Also, I thought that it was amusing that even though I tried to pose them from shortest to tallest, it looks almost like the opposite of that in the photo where they are sitting on the floor trying to cross their arms.

  5. This is a great post, the girls all did very well! Thanks for the funny, informative pictures (my favorite is the walk like an Egyptian one) :-)

  6. I didn't know that Winx had a black girl! Even though I have a Winx girl she is still in the box and I never paid attention to the fact that their legs are so long and wobbly.

I have an affection for the articulated Bratz body so that's my favorite.

    1. Hi Muff! Yes, Layla/Aisha is the black girl for the early line of Winx dolls, and I think that the name is the same for the current line of Winx girls. Layla has long crazy legs.

  7. Hi there! I'm currently looking for a doll body that matches this skin tone: https://i.imgur.com/nSEvmt0.jpg Do you have any suggestions that could work?

    1. Hi Anonymous! It is difficult to try to match heads to bodies from photos alone, and I'm not familiar with the doll in the photo. Are you wanting to match that doll with a shorter girl doll, like the ones in this post? I don't know of any dolls this size that would be a good match for that head. But check out my Teen Girl Dolls Comparisons post: http://roxannesdolls.blogspot.com/2014/01/teen-girl-doll-comparisons.html. Kiyoni Brown is a little taller than these dolls and has a deep skin tone, but it doesn't look like she will be an exact match. Good luck!

    2. I see. This doll has been the MOST difficult to find a body that matches her, so I'm buying another one that has a dark skin tone, but at least colored to make my body search for her a bit easier. Thanks for the suggestions!

By the way, the head in the photograph is a knockoff ddung doll from china. The folks from there have been experimenting with a darker skin tone lately.

    3. You're welcome! I'd be interested in seeing your finished doll once you get the head/body match that you want. It's nice to know that manufacturers in China are making darker skin tones.
