Music Video Imani

My Menelik doll, purchased sometime in the early 90's, was my first African American doll as an adult collector. Recently it occurred to me that I had never purchased his girlfriend/wife Imani. I went searching and found one that I absolutely love for an extremely reasonable price (less than her original retail price).

She was described as NRFB, so prior to her arrival, I had been trying to talk myself into not opening the box. When she arrived, I saw that the original tape on the box had been cut, so I believe that she had been removed from her box previously. That gave me all the incentive that I needed to remove her. She had never been removed from her packaging, though, so she remains secured and in wonderful condition, and I've returned her to her box. I am so tempted to play with this one, though. Her wigs are just too tempting for me. I would love to create a music video starring Imani and Menelik!

Here is a closeup of the lovely Imani. She is wearing a jeweled dress with cut-away shoulders, and she has short cropped hair. This set comes with a hooded cape, a cap with braids and beads, a crimped weave wig, short red bob wig, camcorder, camera, microphone, and hairbrush. She has gold earrings, a ring, and gold shoes. She has a "You Can Be What You Wanna Be" booklet and cut-out cover, a diary, dictionary, and cut-out poster.

She also comes with a cardboard cut-out makeup case, and cardboard cut-out makeup.

Menelik is thrilled to have his beloved Imani with him at long last.

I don't think that Imani will stay secured to her packaging for long. I'll need to think of a song that I... I mean that Imani will sing for her upcoming music video.

I remember reading the Olmec story on the side of Menelik's box all those years ago when I purchased him, and I was touched by it. I remember that I was so happy to see a Black doll on the shelves, especially a male doll. The side of Imani's box has the Olmec story.

  1. She is very pretty and the accesories look like they have a high play value (the wigs!). Her face looks exactly like Hasbro's Imani's - I wonder if they had some sort of co-op.

    1. Thank you IHime! She does look exactly like Hasbro's Imani. I wonder what the deal is there?

  2. Oh, she is lovely doll. I am sure Menelik would be so much more happy if you took her out of the box. Their lives would be so much more interesting that way!

    1. Thanks Phyllis! I have a feeling that Menelik won't have to wait much longer until she's released from her box. :)

  3. Nice! I have never seen the one with the short hair! I have also found that the Imani dolls (long hair) don't lose their hair with age. Hope it is the same for the short. I have my Imani(long hair) on a Tiana body. It is a good match, if you need a new body. I think http://i-luv-dolls.blogspot.com/search/label/Imani Menelik should be very happy with her! She can be all the women of his dreams!

    1. Thanks Ms. Leo! Your Imani looks great on the Disney body! I do hope that her short hair lasts. It appears to be in good shape right now. I'm sure that Menelik would appreciate her with a new articulated body. Maybe he can have an articulated body of his own one day as well.

    1. Thank you The grandmommy! It is quite tempting to play with her right now. In fact, I have several dolls that are still in their boxes that I need to play with. How did this happen? LOL

    1. Hi Muff! I do think that they look great together. I was glad to see this Imani with a gold dress that matches the accents of Menelik's outfit.

    1. Thank you Georgia Girl! Hopefully I will be able to keep up with all of her accessories, especially the wigs! That has me wondering where my Jazz Diva wigs are. I need to mend a couple of them, and one is currently still on the doll inside the box. Mental note: get a special container for dolly wigs.

    1. Thank you, Debbie! I don't think that I've seen the Rock Star Imani before. I saw photos of Hasbro's Pop Star Imani after I did a search based on the information that IHime gave above. I'll keep searching. :)

    2. The one I referred to as Rock Star is actually Dance Lights Imani.

I will share the link later. Can't do,it with this device.

    3. Ah, ok I've seen that one. Her styling and accessories are almost exactly like the Hasbro's Pop Star Imani mentioned above.

    4. I didn't realize Hasbro (or maybe I forgot) created Imani dolls.

I vaguely remember there was a collaboration or partnership between Eason (founder of Olmec) and Hasbro, then some sort of scandal erupted between Eason and another party or maybe Hasbro and Eason left the doll world abruptly never to return. This might be when Hasbro assumed ownership of the remaining Olmec items or those that were produced when the two companies partnered. This is one of those things that makes you go hmmm and want to investigate further.

  8. I'm starting to question the whole "the original tape had been cut...." This is the second post I've read today with that same claim. Hmmm? Lol! Congrats on getting her.

    1. LOL, the tape really was cut! :) I had good intentions of leaving them in the box, but oh well. No need to leave them in there when I know they've previously been removed. :)

  9. You know I love a doll with short hair. She nice. She reminds me of my short haired Janay doll. Just curious, is she still safe and secure in her box? Have you selected a song? Did you do the video yet? As you can see, I am getting around to some of the older posts I missed. Better late than never.

    1. Hi Vanessa! Yes, she is still in her box for now. I have an articulated body that has become available, and I'm contemplating rebodying her. I have not selected a song for her yet, and it will probably be a while before she sees any play time. But, I feel that she simply must star in her own video at some point. :)
