Calista's Diary Entry - Snow Day

Dear Diary,

There was a bad winter storm here, so school was closed today.  Yay!  I spent time hanging out with friends from school.

Kana and Briana Joy tried to make a snowman, but the snow wouldn't pack very well.  Their snowman looked pretty sad.

Dominique threw ill-formed snowballs at people.  Skipper was not amused.  Eventually, we all ganged up on her and threw snowballs that mostly fell apart before they hit her.

There was a layer of ice under the snow, so we had to be very careful when walking around.  Kiara nearly slipped and fell.  That would've been embarrassing for her (but funny for us).

The best part was that I got to spend time with Bob.  We spent some time just walking and looking around.  Everything was really beautiful with the layer of snow.

We made snow angels.  :)

Today was a really great day.  Don't get me wrong, I like school, but I have to say that getting an unexpected day off was great.

  1. Snow day! I'm from Florida and it snowed once here in my entire lifetime. I did not care for it at all! It did shut down my university and classes were cancelled for a few days, so that was nice, but snow = no, in my opinion.

It's about 70 degrees here now (and I'm sitting next to a heater because I hate being cold, lol, 83 or higher I say!) so it's so weird for me to see your dolls playing in snow.

    1. Hi Muff! 70 degrees sounds like a dream. It is currently 20 degrees here. I absolutely loved snow days as a kid. My elementary school was on a huge hill, and we used to use our notebooks as sleds. My house sat atop a hill, and we used cardboard boxes and laundry baskets a sleds.

Now, I'm not so amused. My neighborhood sits atop a hill. The view is beautiful. However, in ice and snow it is no fun. Last night when trying to make my way home from work, I got stuck at the top of a steep hill only 2 blocks away from home. My wheels were just spinning. I called my husband to come and rescue me. He managed to back the car down the hill, and we spent the next hour and a half trying to get home, and we were within a couple of blocks of our house the entire time. We had to face hills in all directions. We passed other cars with spinning wheels, and vehicles that had run off the side of the road. I was so happy to get home and get my car safely into the garage!

I did not go to work today. I avoid driving on ice whenever possible. Playing in the snow is not fun like it was when I was a kid, but it was fun taking the dolls out to play in the snow for a bit.

  2. I love to see your dolls playing in the snow and making angels. I am watching them the same way I used to watch my siblings play in knee deep snow...from afar. My mother and I used to be inside while my dad and siblings romped in the snow. LOL
Now where I live it is in the 70's I went out without a coat today! We get our cold days but they are few. To this day I hate wearing a lot of clothes because of the days of wearing so many clothes I looked like a five point star. LOL

    1. Hi The grandmommy, I was definitely a romp in the snow kind of girl growing up. Now, not so much. I'll still get out in the snow occasionally (obviously). My husband asked me today if I wanted to go outside and make snow angels. I looked at him for a few moments, and then told him I'd consider it. Well, I've considered it, and I consider it a bad idea. LOL Maybe tomorrow.

  3. Very nice snow pics!! We get snow every now and then. The weather was nice here (Atlanta) today. I wore a light jacket and was hot in it. We are suppose to have a rainy weekend.

    1. Thank you, Georgia Girl! I was visiting Atlanta once when it snowed. It looked like it was coming down pretty heavily, but it only lightly dusted the ground and it was gone quickly. I wouldn't mind winters like that.

  4. I had to get up out of my warm bed to come into my doll room/office to retype the comment that I typed from my bed on my Kindle Fire that got lost in cyberspace.

I enjoyed Calista's Snow Day diary entry and seeing her and her friends enjoy the no school day in the snow. The snow angels were too cute. If doll world is similar to the real world, the kiddos will have to do like the children here, make up the inclement weather days at the end of the school year or sometime during the year.

I am so glad that your super hero was able to rescue you and that you two made it safely home. Snow mixed with ice and ice alone on the streets is extremely treacherous for driving.

We are experiencing similar weather without the snow, just ice. The temperature was supposed to drop down to the teens last night. The high was low 20s yesterday which is supposed to continue through Monday when the sun will finally return and the temperature is supposed to rise above freezing but still low 30s. I will be inside the house and will not drive or ride in a car until the streets are clear.

As young child, like most children, I had few fears. Our neighborhood had a hill that dropped down to a sidewalk and busy street. In good weather we would use cardboard boxes to slide down that hill until my mother found out and forbid me from doing that. We could have easily slid right into the street and been run over by car. But kids don't think about danger. Their minds are focused on fun.

At around age 8, I played in a graveyard that was near my home, too, until my mother found out and again forbid me from doing that. I went close to it one additional time, playing with neighborhood kids in the unpaved alley that separated the graveyard and my house. My head was swarmed by bees that got stuck in my hair. One of the boys used a piece of paper to swat the bees in my head that probably stunned instead of killing the bees and gave me a tremendous headache. I ran home crying. Mama washed my hair and said something similar to, "That's what you get for being disobedient!" Needless to say, I didn't go near that alley or that graveyard ever again.

    1. Thanks Debbie! I appreciate you getting up out of your warm bed, because I have enjoyed reading your comments. I was watching the news and I saw quite a few scenes from your city and the hazardous conditions there, and I was thinking about you. I'm glad that you will not be getting out in this mess.

Doll world is similar to the real world and these kiddies will have to make up the snow day. They are not concerned with that now, though. They were just happy to have a day off school to play in the snow. They will be grumbling when they have to make up the day next May.

I think about some of the dangerous things that I did as a child and I just shake my head. That hill at my elementary school was very steep and it was not uncommon for us to slide out into the street. We used to have a look-out that would watch for cars and tell us when to go. If my parents knew that I was doing that, I would've been in trouble for sure. As for sliding down the hill in cardboard boxes in front of my house, my parents knew about that and allowed it. The hill led to the sidewalk, and there was a patch of grass on the other side, so we never actually went into the street. We got into trouble about using the laundry baskets, though, but those were the best!

That is such a scary story about the bees swarming your head! I'm glad that you were okay. I didn't have many fears growing up, but I do remember being scared of bees! My mom would've said something similar to what your mother said. She would always tell me not to do something, and I would always ask her why, and she would tell me "Because I said so." Then when I'd do it anyway and something bad happened, she tell me that now I know why.

  5. We are threatened with snow here in Philly. Crossing my fingers that we don't get it or that if we do, it isn't too messy or too cold after. I HATE trying to walk on ice. I don't mind cold temperatures, but the ice horrifies me. It is so treacherous!

I enjoyed Calista's snow day. As DBG points out, Calista will probably have to make that day up, but I suppose the "free" day - unexpected release - outweighs any thought of the future make up. Excellent storytelling and photos - thanks for taking on the inclement weather to share this story.

    1. Thanks D7ana! I'm crossing my fingers with you that it doesn't get too messy or cold there. Yes, the kiddies will have to make up the snow day, but they are not worried about that right now. They are too busy having fun in the snow.

    1. Thanks Marta! Yes, the schools and several businesses closed due to the winter storm. As you can see, the kids don't mind a bit.

  7. Where I live in Australia, we very rarely get snow and never have snow days. in my area, schools get closed on high fire danger days when it might be too dangerous for kids to go to school - so although kids enjoy the day off (as they always do), you always have to be aware of where they are and what else is happening. Callista's snow day looks like fun.

    1. Hi Carrickters! Somehow high fire danger days do not sound like as much fun as snow days, but I'm sure that kids enjoy a day off any way that they can get them. :) Thanks for your comments.
